A Women’s Home (2023)
A woman's home is a typology of photographs that explores the realm of self portraiture. Delving into the examination of preconceived stereotypes and domestic settings this depicts the connections that lie between. By constructing photographs within the home, this aims to unveil how societal norms shape and confine the female experience in certain environments. Each self portrait serves as a visual critique of the expectations imposed solely upon women that become burdened to the home. Within the visual narratives of domestic setting, I meticulously construct scenes to respond to challenges against identity, culture and society, inviting viewers to reassess the familiar.

The embodiment of this work becomes grounded in the exploration of diverse female photographers. In particular those active during the 1970s-1990, which these artists stand as counter narratives that confront the cliches and norms based around women. Professor Marsha Meskimmon states “Women artists considering domesticity in their self portraiture frequently contended with boundaries between the public and the private and the way in which society constructs definitions of the domestic women'' (1996, p.162). This emphasises how domestic spaces which traditionally have been associated with women, have now become a site for both confinement and empowerment.

To conclude, the series ‘A woman's home’ becomes an invitation to critically engage with the stereotypes that persist in defining women. The deliberate choice to frame narratives within domestic spaces adds layers of complexity, symbolising power which confronts the traditional roles of women as passive subjects. Overall, this work becomes situated in feminist contemporary photography.
